Stripe dunning, explained — and how to recover more of it
Dunning is the process of chasing a payment after a charge fails. Stripe ships a solid baseline: retries on a schedule and templated reminder emails. This page covers what that baseline does, where it leaves money on the table, and what SteadyStreamPay adds on top.
What Stripe's built-in dunning does
When a subscription invoice fails, Stripe retries the card over a configured window — with Smart Retries, timing is based on Stripe's own network signals — and can email the customer at each attempt. You choose what happens at the end of the window: cancel the subscription, mark it unpaid, or leave it past due. It is reliable, it is free, and it is generic: every customer gets the same template on the same cadence, regardless of why the card declined.
Where default dunning loses revenue
- Decline codes are ignored in the messaging. An expired card, an insufficient-funds decline, and a bank-level block each need a different ask, but the template treats them identically.
- Email is the only channel. If the reminder lands in a promotions tab, the recovery attempt ends there.
- Friction at the update step. Sending customers back to a login page loses the ones who were willing to pay.
- It only reacts. Cards you know will expire next month are not handled until the charge already failed.
Stripe dunning vs. SteadyStreamPay
| Area | Stripe default dunning | With SSP installed |
|---|---|---|
| Retry schedule | Fixed or Smart Retries over a set window | Retries paired with AI-timed outreach per customer |
| Customer messaging | Templated dunning emails from Stripe | Brand-voice email written from your instructions |
| Follow-up channel | Email only | Conversational AI email sequences that escalate when unread |
| Payment update flow | Customer logs in or hunts for a link | Zero-login Stripe-hosted update link |
| Card expiry | Reacts after the charge fails | Pre-dunning warning 30 days before expiry |
SSP runs alongside Stripe's retries — it does not replace your retry settings.
Smart timing beats fixed schedules
Default dunning fires on a calendar. SSP reads the decline code and sends the recovery link when that customer is most likely to be online and able to act.
Zero-login payment links
Every outbound message carries a Stripe-hosted update link, so the customer never logs in, resets a password, or contacts support to pay.
Conversational AI email sequences
If the first recovery email goes unread for 48 hours, SSP sends a human-sounding follow-up instead of letting an involuntary churn quietly complete.

$0 upfront. SSP charges a flat 5% only on the revenue it successfully recovers, billed through Stripe.
